Upon arrival please ensure your team captain reports to a member of staff from Active Devon in the downstairs bar where you will be provided with a match schedule and your Ping! equipment for the evening. Please ensure that all participating team members arrive at the club by 5.45pm for registration and briefing.

Please note:  Refreshments will be available to purchase,  NO DRINKS are to be taken into the playing area or left on the floor during the tournament.

Playing by the rules

  • Teams of 4 players.
  • At least 1 player must be of the opposite sex.
  • 1 team member is to be designated team captain.

Players toss a coin at the start of each game. The winner can:

  • elect to serve first or
  • make his opponent serve first or
  • decide which end of the table he prefers to play at first

Players in each team must be ranked 1-4 (1 being the best player).
In a match teams will play 4 singles games against an opposing team. In order to beat your opposing team your players will need to win 3 or 4 out of the 4 single games to win the overall match against a team.

The aim of the game is simple; hit the ball over the net onto your opponent’s side. A point is won by you if your opponent is unable to return the ball to your side of the table (e.g. they miss the ball, they hit the ball but it misses your side of the table, or the ball hits the net), or if they hit the ball before it bounces on their side of the table.

  • You must play your opposing ranking number i.e Rank 1 plays Rank 1, Rank 2 plays Rank 2 etc
  • Each player has 2 serves each
  • The winner of a game is the first to 5 points (if it’s 4-4 next point wins
  • The team who wins the most number of singles games overall against the opposing team will win the match and gain 5 points, whether they win 4 single games – 0 or 3 -1,
  • 3 points for a draw (2 -2)
  • 1 point for a loss (losing 1-3 or 0-4).
  • The teams who finish in the top two positions at the end of the pool matches will go through to a knockout stage. If this is a draw it will go down to legs.
  • The teams who don’t qualify will go through to a plate/bowl competition.
  • Players can only use the Ping bats and balls that will be provided on the night.
  • A player takes two serves before the ball switches to the opponent to serve.
  • If your opponent allows the ball to bounce more than once on their side of the table, they will lose the point.
  • The ball may bounce anywhere on both sides of the table and, unlike tennis, you don’t have to serve to one part of the table
  • If the ball touches the net and still bounces on your opponent’s side of the table, the service must be replayed.
  • However, if the ball touches the net and does not bounce on your opponent’s side of the table, the server loses the point.
  • A player loses a point if they:
  • Fail to make a good serve (e.g. throwing the ball in the air and failing to hit the ball or failing to hit it onto his opponent’s side of the table)
  • Allows the ball to bounce twice on his side of the table
  • Does not hit the ball after it has bounced on his side of the table
  • Does not hit the ball onto his opponent’s side of the table
  • Hits the ball before it has bounced (i.e. volleying the ball) unless it’s obviously not going to bounce on his side of the table
  • Hits the ball twice in succession (i.e. a double hit)
  • Puts his non-playing hand on the table or net or moves the table
  • Obstructs the ball with any part of his body or clothing (unless it’s obviously not going to bounce on his side of the table).

The Spirit of Ping
The Exeter Business Games Ping Challenge is a social competition. In the true Spirit of Ping we would like to encourage teams to make the experience enjoyable for all players involved. Players have the responsibility to know the rules, play fair and follow the tournament schedule.
Even in tough game situations, all players are expected to maintain these guidelines.
